'n Boor en bottel is nie maatjies nie

Hierdie is 'n lig wat ek vir 'n werkskollega as 'n verjaarsdag geskenk gemaak het. Die lig het egter ietwat van 'n storie agter hom. My oorspronklike plan was om 'n lig te maak uit die vonkelwynbottel wat ons by haar verjaarsdag oopgemaak het. Nadat ek 'n spesiale reeling met die waiter getref het om die bottel te kry, en dit toe stil-stil by die restaurant uitgesneak het sonder dat iemand my sien, het my planne toe nou nie so mooi uitgewerk nie.

Ek het my broer se hulp ingewin en wou 'n gat in die bodem boor vir die draad om deur te gaan. Alles het heel glad verloop...tot die boorpunt deurgedruk het. Die boor het effens geglip, en toe eindig ons op met 'n gat wat bietjie groter en meer ongelyk is as wat ek wou hê. Met my familie se hulp beraam ons toe 'n ander plan met die bottel, wat sou werk, maar toe ek by die huis kom sien ek daar is ook 'n bars wat stadig aan versprei.

So toe vat ek maar 'n ander bottel wat ek gehad het, en maak iets daaruit. Ek het vir 'n oomblik oorweeg om steeds vir haar te sê dat dit haar verjaarsdagbottel is, maar dan sal ek elke keer moet jok as ons oor die lig praat :) So, sy gaan nou nie kan spog dat dit van haar verjaarsdag-vonkelwynbottel gemaak is nie, maar hopelik hou sy darem van die lig!

O ja, die skerm is gemaak uit sulke awesome deurskynende plastiek film wat ek uit 'n rekenaar keyboard gekry het.

This is a light that I made for a work colleague as a birthday gift. There is however a little bit of a story behind the story here. My initial plan was to make a light with the sparkling wine bottle that we opened at her birthday party. After making secret plans with the waiter to get the bottle, and sneaking it out of the restaurant, my plans didn't quite work out the way I planned.

I made a quick visit to my brother to use his drill to make a hole in the bottom of the bottle for the wire to go through. Everything went smoothly, until the moment the drill bit broke through. The drill slipped a bit, and we ended up with a sort of edgy hole that was much bigger than what I wanted. Still, we quickly tried to make another plan with the bottle, but then I noticed a crack that was spreading slowly, so it was bye bye bottle.

What to do? Well I had another bottle lying around, so I decided to make something out of it. I must say, for a few minutes I did consider telling her that this was her birthday bottle, but then I would have to lie every time we talked about the light...so many lies! :) So, she will not be able to brag about the fact that it is made with her birthday bottle, but hopefully she still likes it!

Oh, the shade is made from this awesome transparent plastic film thing I got out of an old computer keyboard.
